To keep it simple, royalty-free is a copyright term used to describe loops, samples, and even tracks that can be used in your creations without paying the original creator. An example of a huge royalty-free sample company is Cymatics.
There are hundreds of sample companies that created royalty-free samples with the intention of having music producers use them. Splice, Loopcloud, and Sounds.com are some of the many royalty-free libraries out there.
Why does this matter?
In the situation above, the sample used was not royalty-free making it a copyright infringement case against the producer. It is always best to read over any terms and conditions when downloading sample packs to avoid infringing on another’s copyright. If you really want a copyrighted sample, make sure to be aware of the costs of licensing that sample as well.
