split sheet -

To keep it simple, a split sheet outlines the master % and composition % owed to each writer or producer in the creation process. The document is signed by everyone and used for inputing in the correct splits for each writer. This document is also used to store contact information, writer information (like full name and IPIs), and publisher information.

In the situation above, the lack of a split sheet between the two roommates can lead to a lot of issues and raises a lot of questions. Should it be 50/50? Did that one line really matter?

Why does this matter?

I’ve been in countless situations where split sheets would have solved everything. I’m a firm believer that splits should be decided towards the middle of the creation process since it allows all parties to understand who has contributed what. Even if it’s written on a napkin and signed with a sharpie, always have a split sheet.
