Picture this. You’ve been dreaming of becoming a professional songwriter your whole life. You have hundreds upon hundreds of songs written and recorded. You start cold pitching out your tracks to local artists and label A&Rs to see if anyone shows interest.
One random A&R reaches back out and asks if the song is available and if you have a lyric sheet.
In this situation, sending a picture of your songwriting notebook with your messy handwriting would not be a good impression.
“What should I do?”
To keep it simple, a lyric sheet is a document that contains the lyrics and writer information for a song. Some other information to include is the writer’s name, PRO, IPI, and the key and tempo of the song.
Why does this matter?
For a lot of labels, radio hosts, and sync agencies, having a lyric sheet is extremely helpful when considering new music. For example, a sync agency will rarely select a song with explicit lyrics given the nature of motion picture content rating.
