Sync Licensing -
Anytime you watch a commercial, movie, or random ad on TikTok, you are witnessing a sync license in action.
To keep it simple, sync licensing (also known as synchronization) is the pairing of audio with visuals to create an audiovisual work. This ranges from film/television to video games and phone apps.
In the simplest form, it can be a pharmaceutical company using an upbeat/happy background track to help sell a product. In this case, the company would pay a fee to the artist/composer in order to use the song.
The fees can range from a few dollars to thousands.
From my personal experience, a movie trailer can pay up to $12,000 for a minute and a half of music.
Why does this matter?
Sync licensing is becoming extremely important for artists who want to diversify their income streams, broaden their fanbase, and collaborate with dope brands. As a fellow starving artist, you should never leave an opportunity on the table.
